A hard disk drive
has several names; Hard drive for short, or abbreviated HDD. A
hard drive is the device that stores all permanent information
on your notebook computer. The larger the hard drive, the more
information you can save to it. Most files are fairly small,
such as Word Documents and Excel spreadsheets which do not use a
lot of the available space on your hard drive. Some files such
as programs, games, movies and music are large and need more
space to save the file on the hard drive. Standard sizes for a
laptop hard drive are 20 Gigabytes to 100 Gigabytes. A 20
Gigabyte hard drive is the equivalent of 14,222 floppy disks.
Hard drive speeds do not vary much in standard consumer laptops.
Most hard drives run at 4200 rpm, or revolutions per minute.
Because of the smaller size of laptop hard drives, they are not
able to reach the speeds of desktop hard drives without being
quite expensive. It is possible to upgrade the hard drive in
most notebook computers by purchasing a compatible drive for
replacement.
